In this pursuit, World Grocer operates in an environmentally responsible manner, and has done so since inception. Our early initiatives and actions – taken well before the present day focus on “green” – have served us well, underscoring how effective environmental management makes good business sense. We recognize that environmental leadership fosters business efficiency and effectiveness.

World Grocer’s flagship product – Canned Emergency Purified Drinking Water with a 30+ year shelf-life – is packaged in bio-degradable steel cans. Each can has a capacity of 28 oz, but filled with only 24 oz. of water, to allow for vacuum sealing and expansion.

We categorically reject plastics as packaging, because of the disastrous consequences they have on the environment. (The Earth Policy Institute estimates the US alone consumes at least 1.5 million barrels of oil each year to make the plastic water bottles for water, enough to power 100,000 cars for a year. Nearly 90% of the water bottles are not recycled).

We also strongly reject packaging in multi-layered cartons of paper, plastic and aluminum because of the difficulty and paucity of recycling capabilities, and also because the polyethylene liner in cartons may leach toxic chemicals into the carton contents.
